Because Penang Hill has a cooler environment, it being at some 800 mtrs above sea level, it is a popular retreat from the tropical heat of the coastal plain. A number of bungalows were built around Flagstaff Hill but Government Hill, Bukit Timah (Malay for Tin Hill) and others were designated water catchment areas and no development has been allowed on them.

The Crag Hotel was open until the Second World War but after the war it fell into disuse until 1955, when the International School of Penang, also know as The Uplands School, leased it to operate its primary boarding school. The Uplands School occupied Crag Hotel and Grace Dieu not too far away, until 1977 since when it has been left unoccupied..

The building was used in 1991 as the film set for the movie Indochine , and more recently for the British made series, Indian Summers, first aired on UK television in March 2015.

The most important feature of Penang Hill is the cooler climate. The core summit area has an average temperature ranging from 20 deg C to 27 deg C. The mean minimum temperature is consistently below 21 deg C. The hottest months are between December and April while the coolest months are between June and October.

The pond in the David Brown's place at the top of Strawberry Hill. Francis Light introduced strawberry growing here over 200 years ago, and the name stuck to this, a hill on top of a hill .

The most convenient way up to Penang Hill is by means of the Penang Hill Railway, a funicular railway from Air Itam to the top of Flagstaff Hill. Construction of the railway took place between 1906 to 1923, at a cost of 1.5 million Straits dollars. The railway was first opened to the public on 21 October 1923. The 2 km journey used take about half an hour but since the track was upgraded and the change over station removed the trip today can take less than 10 mins, depending if the train stops at staions on the way up or down.
